Bernadette currently works per diem as a Breast Health Nurse Navigator for the Nancy Ausonio Breast Health Center, as well as a Breast Care Coordinator/Navigator consultant for Imaging Associates in Alaska and Mammography Educators.
She started her nursing career at Hazel Hawkins Hospital in her hometown of Hollister, California and spent the last 17 years at Salinas Valley Health (SVH) in a variety of roles. She began as an Interventional Radiology and PICC nurse, where she first embraced the imaging world. She shifted to a Manager position of Inpatient Oncology and Infusion and then transitioned to Breast Health Nurse Navigator.
Bernadette was fortunate to have started her navigation career as an Educare student with instructor Judy Kneece and mentorship with Dr. Amy Stemerman, Breast Imaging Radiologist and Director of the Nancy Ausonio Breast Health Center. This foundation was instrumental in helping her develop a robust navigation program spanning the continuum of care including risk assessment and genetics. During this time period, she also received her GCRA certification from the City of Hope. Bernadette believes that each member of the team plays a vital part in looking beyond imaging and ensuring the whole person is compassionately cared for, every step of the way.
With 40 years of extensive nursing experience, passion for the nursing profession and a commitment to providing quality, patient-centered care, Bernadette has found purpose in making a difference and touching lives. Her mission now is to inspire, teach and mentor. She holds certifications as a Certified Breast Care Nurse (CBCN) from the Oncology of Nursing Society (ONS) and Oncology Nurse Navigator - Certified Generalist from the Academy of Oncology Nurse Navigators (AONN).
Bernadette lives in Hollister, California with her husband Steve and their dog Mali. She enjoys spending time with her family, which includes her 4 adult children and 5 grandchildren, as well as traveling the world.
