What are the structured education requirements for Breast Ultrasound Certification?

There are a total of 16 structured education requirements, including Basic Principles of Breast US, Image Formation, Patient Interactions, Breast Interventions, among others. Other course content is updated annually to ensure all content specifications are met.

Do you have to complete structured education before starting clinical experience?

No, you don’t have to but we suggest starting with some of the basic courses so you have the fundamentals before completing your clinical work.

What credentials will you earn when you take the board exam?

Once you finish the requirements and pass the test, you will have earned R.T.(BS)(ARRT) — Registered Technologist in Breast Sonography

I understand that we can take this course at our own pace, but is there an expiration date when I can no longer access it?

You can purchase the course and take it at your convenience. It will not expire and the resources are available to you long after you pass your certification exam.

What are the clinical experience requirements? 

A candidate must perform a total of 200 breast sonography patient examinations, which may not be simulated. A bilateral examination is equivalent of two breast examinations

Additionally, you must participate in at least 20 interventional procedures. This includes: fluid aspiration, needle core biopsy, vacuum-assisted core biopsy,  clip placement, or pre-op needle localization. Any combination that adds up to 20 is acceptable. For example, a candidate may participate in 20 core biopsies; or a candidate may participate in 10 core biopsies, six clip placements, and four needle localizations.

Does your program include clinical experience or do we have to procure our own site to gain experience?

The Mammography Educators program does not include clinical work. However, from our experience employers are generally very happy to help their team members cross train and broaden their skills. It’s a huge value add for the employer.
